Bride-to-be drops five dress sizes to fit into dream dresses

A bride-to-be is fighting fit after dropping five sizes to fit into her dream dress.

Lorraine Bickerton was preparing for her big day in May of this year but wanted to lose a few pounds before the wedding.

Fast forward a year and the 34-year-old from Motherwell has lost more than two-and-a-half stones as she continues her weight loss journey.

Lorraine said: “Looking back to week beginning March 9, almost a year already, I was 15 pounds away from the target weight I wanted to achieve.

“My main goal at the time for getting down to this weight was my wedding in May 2021.

“I had booked into a few bridal shops to try on wedding dresses in the middle of April 2020 and knew at this point I was buying a dress three sizes smaller than what I measured would give me the motivation to get the last of the weight off.”

Fast forward almost two weeks and due to shift changes at work, Lorraine had missed group and then the news broke that national lockdown was upon us due to Covid-19.

“I was a little worried that the restrictions imposed on all non-essential businesses meant our Slimming World groups couldn’t go ahead as normal,” said Lorraine.

“But I remember the support we gave each other.”

Lorraine need not have worried as her consultant, Ann Hogarth, who runs the Motherwell group in the Baptist Church, reached out on the group’s Facebook page.

The group transferred from being run in venue to being run virtually on the Zoom platform which still allowed members to interact and support each other weekly.

Lorraine had to make changes to the ways she shopped and engaged in activity again due to Covid-19 restrictions but was really committed to her weight loss.

She said: “Meals had to be planned three or four days in advance and everything bought in the one shop.

“Normally I would visit three different shops depending on what ingredients I needed for what I chose to make.

“The gyms were all closed so I started off with walks round the local nature reserve where I live.

“There is a multitude of paths, so no one walk was ever the same, I’d also use YouTube home workout videos that didn’t need any equipment.”

Lorraine’s’ wedding dress was bought in October last year when non-essential shops were allowed to open.

Unfortunately she’s having to postpone the wedding to next year due to everything still going on with Covid but having lost 2st 8lbs and learnt new lifestyle skills around how she shops, cooks and eats, alongside her activity plan, she knows she’ll feel amazing for her wedding.
