Black Voices, Black Lives

October 29 @ 15:00 Free

A two-day series of events at the University of Aberdeen exploring the expression and articulation of black experience from different historical, cultural and creative perspectives.

Friday 29th October, 2021 (Sir Duncan Rice Library, Meeting Room 1, and online via Zoom) 

3 – 4pm, Maisha Wester, ‘Black Voices Speaking Back’ (African American Gothic stories and Horror films)

4.30 – 5.30 pm, Leila Aboulela, ‘Decolonising the Tragic Victorian Hero: A Fictional Recounting, from a Sudanese Perspective, of Gordon of Khartoum’ (creative writing)

Saturday 30th October, 2021 (online via Zoom) 

2 – 3pm Sophie White, ‘Voices of the Enslaved: Silence and Eloquence’ (18th c. New Orleans slave testimonies)

3.30 – 4.30pm Panel Discussion with all speakers about Black voices and decolonisation.
