House of the Dragon takes fans back over 200 years in Westeros to a time where Targaryens rule. This is ancient history to the events of Game of Thrones and long before Robert’s Rebellion, which takes place around fifteen years prior to season one.

Currently the show has only one season green lit with ten episodes but boasts a cast of fresh faces to carry these new central roles. Along with Matt Smith, there is Emma D’Arcy, Graham McTavish, Olivia Cooke, Eve Best, and Paddy Considine.

Who is Matt Smith?

British actor Matt Smith was born on October 28, 1982, in Northampton. He shot to fame in 2011 as the newly regenerated Doctor, the youngest person to ever play the role.

As a teenager he aspired to be a football player like his grandfather and had joined youth teams in his home county. A back injury resulting in spondylosis scuppered his plans but he didn’t immediately turn to acting.

His uncle taught at a drama school and signed him up for productions, eventually this led to Smith joining the National Youth Theatre and studying drama at university. His acting career took off while at university and Smith nearly got the role of Will in The Inbetweeners but lost out to Simon Bird.

He appeared in TV show Party Animals which attracted the attention of the Doctor Who casting agents. When Smith was announced as the new 11th Doctor, he was a relative unknown.

Since his days in the Tardis, Smith has gone on to portray Prince Philip in Netflix’s The Crown – a role which earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination. He previously won a National Television Award for Doctor Who as well as a Bafta Nomination for best actor.

He has also tackled Hollywood by starring in the Sony/Marvel film Morbuis, while the film did not receive a great critical reception, it did spark multiple memes online. A clip of Smith dancing as his character Milo Morbius went viral on TikTok after the film was released.

Who does Matt Smith play in House of the Dragon

His latest role is as Prince Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon, the brother of King Viserys I Targaryen. The prince is a skilled warrior and wields the Valerian steel sword named Dark Sister.

Descriptions of Daemon call him daring and dashing but note his hot temper too, much like other Targaryens. He rides Caraxes, a large red dragon who is fearsome and once belonged to his uncle Aemon.

During Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war in which the show is set, Daemon is a key figure as a supporter of his wife and niece, Princess Rhaeynra’s, claim to the throne. The Rogue Prince helps her fight against his nephews and Rhaeynra’s half siblings for the right to rule.

House of the Dragon explores this time, giving Matt Smith a central role in the show as an antagonist to the throne. The show will air weekly with ten episodes for fans to devour but there is no word yet on a second season.
