An event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day will take place on Tuesday 27 January in the Cowdray Hall at Aberdeen Art Gallery.
Holocaust Memorial Day is held annually across the world to remember the six million Jews and other groups murdered under Nazi persecution, and genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
Aberdeen Lord Provost, Dr David Cameron, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is an important day for everyone to come together, honour the memory of those who suffered unimaginable loss, and commit ourselves to challenging hatred.
“By remembering the past, we can safeguard the future.”
Holocaust Memorial Day is held each year on 27 January to mark the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
The day will begin with Marischal College being lit from the early hours in purple to represent the Holocaust Memorial flame.
The memorial event will begin at 11:30am at the Cowdray Hall with a musical performance from Music 4 U, followed by a welcome address by Tommy Campbell, a member of the Aberdeen Holocaust Memorial Committee.
The event will also include a dance performance of ‘The Tattoo’ by Tutu’s Senior Dance Group and a talk from Human Rights campaigner Désiré Katihabwa. It will conclude with a reflection from the Lord Provost.
Those wishing to attend are encouraged to book their place via our website, and more information can be found online.
Aberdeen’s Holocaust Memorial Day events are supported by Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeen Holocaust Memorial Committee, Aberdeen Interfaith Group, Aberdeen Trades Union Council, Four Pillars, Grampian Regional Equality Council, Police Scotland, Polish Association Aberdeen, and the University of Aberdeen.
